Locals would, by the way, be offended by just wearing a bikini or bathing suit as well - as you will see, most of the local women are bathing or sunbathing fully clothed only, but they go to the regions of the beach which do not "belong" to a hotel. It would be totally out of place and taste, though, to put your blanket next to such a local family and then bath topless, you might also attract the interest of the police then - so, topless: only on hotel premises.

For me and other women growing up in a culture of British discomfort with all things bodily, these confident French women in Cannes or St Tropez seemed glamorous and worldly.
